Seems like no matter what happens to the Vegas Golden Knights’ goalies, the refs and those in the Situation Room always rule against Gallant’s challenges. The circumstances of last night’s challenge were similar to that of the Shark’s challenge during the playoff series last year, yet a different call was made. The constant inconsistencies of these calls have left fans, players, and coaches wondering if the referees really understand the rules, or are simply making it up as they go. Well we at VGK Ladies did some digging and uncovered the real reason behind this problem.
First, we looked at the official rules. Take a look:
As you can see, they leave a lot up to interpretation. As this can lead to confusion and occasionally refs ruling in a way that the NHL wouldn’t be pleased with, the NHL took precautions and clarified the rules a bit more. **Sidenote: Obviously Goaltender Interference is rule 69… so the refs can screw you.
Rule Number 89: Addendum to Rule 69.
See? There was an explanation all along. The refs know exactly what they’re doing. I’m just sad we used up our one exception on a regular season game, instead of a playoff game. You live and you learn.
Good analysis. And I like your funny commentary and flow chart. Well done!
